About Tiled Of It

What is Tiled Of It?

Tiled Of It (also known as Tile Do Fit) is a dynamic card-based word game with area-control mechanics, created during the Devtober 2022 jam. The game is designed for both solo play offline and multiplayer sessions with friends, where all rooms are private, requiring a unique room code. The objective is to create words, gain control over cards, and score the most points by strategically placing tiles on the grid. While the game is family-friendly, there’s a chance players may encounter words or definitions that might be offensive, though efforts have been made to minimize such occurrences.

How to Play Tiled Of It

The goal of Tiled Of It is to score the most points by creating multiple words, taking control of cards, and avoiding granting points to teammates. Here’s how to play:

 - The First Turn

  • On your first turn, take 1 card from your hand and place it anywhere on an empty spot on the grid.
  • No cards change control on the first turn, even if they form a word. No points are awarded for this move.

 - Subsequent Turns

On every turn after the first, you have two options:

  • Option A (not recommended): Play a card from your hand to the discard pile. No points are awarded, and no cards change control.
  • Option B (recommended): Play a card from your hand (or the discard pile) to the grid. The card should form at least one word. You can place the card on an empty space or on top of an existing card.

 - Building Words

When placing a card, it may form new words by connecting with neighboring cards. If the card you played is the starting point of a word (i.e., it connects with a neighboring card to the right or below), it will gain control over that neighboring card, changing its color to match the card you just placed. This control flows recursively if that neighboring card starts another word.

For each word that is formed, scoring occurs as follows:

  • Control: You gain control of the neighboring cards that are part of the word you’ve formed. This happens before scoring.
  • Scoring: You earn 1 point for each word you form, and the player who controls the neighboring cards also earns 1 point. If you control those cards, you score the points yourself.

 - Example of Word Building

  • Let’s say the blue player places a blue "LE" card on the grid, forming several words. The grid before the move looks like this:

SS and ND start as red, but they’re about to change because "LE" is the start of new words.

  • When the blue player places the "LE" card, it creates the following words:

Left-to-right: PI + LE = PILE, and LE + ND = LEND.

Top-to-bottom: STA + LE = STALE, and LE + SS = LESS.

Since "LE" is the start of both "LEND" and "LESS," it gains control over the neighboring ND and SS cards, turning them blue. Blue now scores 4 points for creating 4 words and gains control over 3 additional cards.

 - Scoring

  • The blue player scores 4 points for forming 4 words.
  • Blue also gains 1 point for controlling the cards PI, ND, and SS (cards that were used to form words).
  • Players who lose control of cards (e.g., red player losing ND to blue) will not score points for those cards.
  • The yellow player scores 1 point for controlling the STA card.

 - End of the Game

  • The game ends when all players have taken an equal number of turns and at least one player has an empty hand. At the end of the game, each player receives 1 bonus point for every card still under their control on the grid.
  • The player with the most points wins, and in case of a tie, the players share the victory.

Tiled Of It offers a fun, strategic word-building experience with area-control mechanics. By strategically placing cards, forming words, and gaining control over neighboring cards, players can score points and dominate the grid. Whether you’re playing solo or with friends, the game challenges you to think critically and compete for control, all while creating a dynamic word constellation.
